![]() Message from the Director of Alumni Relations and Volunteer Engagement
Dear FIRSTNAME:
Hundreds of students are spending this summer as interns, hoping to receive full-time offers by the fall. Many of these students are the only Baruch/CUNY representatives at their internship and are often part of a cohort filled with Ivy Leaguers. Frequently, our students feel they lack the connections to make the most of their internships, and the Office of Alumni Relations and Volunteer Engagement wants to change that. And we need your help!
If there is a Baruch student interning with your company this summer, please reach out and invite them for a 20-minute virtual or in-person coffee. Ask them about their ambitions, and they will ask you about your career path. Share your Baruch story, and they will share their own. I am certain you will be impressed with our students and hopefully will accept their invitation to connect on LinkedIn to facilitate future networking.
This concept of alma mater-based connections and support within corporations is not new. I often quote the Wharton School's "Take the Call" directive, asking alumni to take the call from fellow alumni and students, as you never know what might come of it. I remind our network of more than 160,000 Baruch alumni of the following, respectfully based on the mission statement of the Wharton Club of NY:
Baruch alumni have a vested interest in expanding the network. Everyone knows you have to "give to get," and you have to "help to be helped." It is this enlightened self-interest that is the ultimate power of the Baruch community. The concept is simple enough:
Whether we can offer advice, offer a referral, provide direction, or not... we should still "Take The Call." Taken further, this relationship can impact all aspects of Baruch alumni lives.
As we in the Office of Alumni Relations and Volunteer Engagement start planning fall mentoring programs, networking events, and career workshops, I hope you will spend some time thinking about your Baruch network and not just "Take the Call," but also "Make the Call." Be bold—be Baruch—and see what happens.
I wish you all a healthy, cool, and fruitful summer. Happy networking!
