Alumni Profile

In this week’s alumni spotlight, we speak to Gizelle Lugo (’12). She works at The Dr. Oz Show and also mentors SEEK students in an initiative called Shadow Partners, where she provides them with insight on her day-to-day routine at work and advises them on how to pave their own paths.

What are your responsibilities at your current job?
As the campaign and email operations manager at The Dr. Oz Show, my core responsibilities include: executing and managing sponsored advertising campaigns running on; supporting on-air and digital-only promotions like sweepstakes, giveaways, and contests; deploying our email marketing strategy; conducting routine analysis and reporting on each of the aforementioned to ensure we hit our goals for both our clients and our company.

Why did you enjoy your time as a student at Baruch?
I really made a home for myself while I was there. Baruch has so many clubs and, as a creative, I was immediately drawn to writing and eventually editing our school newspaper, The Ticker, as well as writing for and eventually becoming the Editor in Chief of Encounters Literary & Arts Magazine. I truly believe your college experience is what you make of it. And, at Baruch, I believe there's something there for everyone if you truly look for it.

Why did you choose to participate in a cool initiative like Shadow Partners?
It was a no brainer for me! I have always loved mentoring. I love sharing what I know and have experienced to help guide others. Shadow Partners is amazing in that I get to work with sophomores which is a crucial time for students since they're about to declare their major, but have not yet interned or taken enough of their core classes to fully know what it is they want to do career-wise. So during the mentee's office visit, I always do my best to showcase what a day at The Dr. Oz Show is like for me, what skills I'm using, etc. so they can get a real-world sense of what digital marketing and advertising entails and if it might be a good fit for them. I'm a firm believer that you learn by doing.

What does giving back to Baruch mean to you?
Baruch provided so much for me as an undergraduate and helped open a lot of doors for me after I graduated. I think it's only right that  I pay it forward by giving back to my alma mater and its community since I have them to thank for where I am today. How could I not give back?

What's the most rewarding part about Shadow Partners?
Keeping in touch with all of my mentees. They've all been incredibly driven, bright, and thoughtful, and I hope to continue to mentor them and help them along their path. Seeing them flourish and gain a better understanding of the future they see for themselves is definitely the most rewarding part of contributing to this phenomenal program.
